The covered area in front of the bridge is the old Exeter Fish Market, which was originally erected in the late 19th century as a transit shed to protect cargo offloaded from ships docked at the Quay. It then became the Exeter City Fish Market until the late 1970s. At the end of the road to the right is the old Customs House, the imposing building with five arches and white stonework, and the oldest surviving brick building in Exeter. The Quay's old-world appearance led to the filming here in the 1970's of the television series "The Onedin Line".
