First
First

First , (pronounced 'fearst'), is an area high above Grindlewald which is the starting point for around 80km of hiking trails. At 2,168 metres it is reached directly from Grindlewald by a long gondola lift, travelling via two mid-stations at which you do not have to change. From the restaurant complex at the top, you have a wide choice of walks of all grades, but you are recommended to obtain one of the free route leaflets available at the lift stations before starting out as there is so much choice.

There is a pleasant walk up to the Lake Bachalpsee (route 1) which takes about an hour, from where you can go further on up towards the Faulhorn (route 2). View from First

Alternatively there is the well known Marmot Valley walk (route 17) which takes you to the top of the Schwarzhof in about 3 hours, or a direct route to Grosse Scheidegg (route 6) in about 1¼ hours.

You can also walk down from the top station (route 8) via the two mid-stations at Schrechfeld (30 mins), and Bort (a further 50 mins), and then to Grindlewald (a further 1¼ hours), but before descending check the times of the last gondola down in case you are feeling tired!
