The Niederhorn at 1,950 metres is reached from Beatenbucht on the edge of Lake Thun, via a cog railway to Beatenberg and then changing to a gondola lift to the peak.
Once at the top station there is a choice of walks, the best of which continues up along the ridge to Burgfeldstand at 2,063 metres with superb views of the Justis valley on one side and a panoramic view of the Eiger, the Mönch and the Jungfrau on the other; a 1¾ hour round trip. Alternatively you can walk back down from the top station to Beatenberg in about 3 hours, to pick up the cog railway back to the lakeside.
From Interlaken, travel to Beatenbucht by steamer on Lake Thun, and either return the same way, or take the bus from Beatenbucht back to Interlaken, stopping off at Sundlaunen to visit the St Beatus Caves if you have time.
The St Beatus Caves are situated at the top of a steep footpath leading from the bus stop near Sundlaunen, and have guided tours lasting about 30 mins. Allow about 1½ hours in all including the walk.
