The Schilthorn
The revolving restaurant

The Schilthorn at 2,970 metres, is reached by a two stage cable car from the village of Mürren, changing at Birg. In good weather there is a superb 360° panoramic view from the the famous revolving restaurant at the top, which was featured in the James Bond film 'O.H.M.S.S.'

Mürren is reached from Lauterbrunnen, either by taking the cog railway up to Grütschalp and then the short train ride via Winteregg to Mürren, or by bus to Stechelberg and then by cable-car.

There is not a lot to do at the top of the Schilthorn, and if you have to make a choice, then the Jungfrau excursion has much more to offer. A view from the Schilthorn

Returning from Mürren there is a nice easy 1½ hour walk back to Grütschalp passing the station for the cog railway up to the Allmondhubel, (which is also worth a visit if you have the time), and then the cog railway from Grütschalp back down to Lauterbrunnen.

Alternatively from Mürren you can take the two-stage cable car down to Stechleberg and then the post-bus to Lauterbrunnen, stopping off for an hour or so at the Trümmelbach waterfalls.

These impressive waterfalls have formed over millions of years and are well worth a visit in any weather. They combine all the melt water from the three great mountains, the Eiger, the Mönch, and the Jungfrau. There is a lift inside the mountain to the top of the falls, from which you have several tunnels and viewing platforms to explore. You must have a waterproof jacket and hood. Don't take the lift down or you will miss the best part but walk down the path instead. Allow about an hour for the waterfalls
